Expatriates played critically important role to shape many countries’ (including India) fiscal environment and economic growth. They are equally valued citizens with diversified rights. At the moment Intolerance and extremism are two enemies of our nation. Fundamentalism at its any form needs to be stopped. Currently, so called pro- and anti-liberation forces and their supporters are not free from it and equally responsible to spread a vicious cycle of hatred, which MUST BE STOPPED. We certainly need renaissance and emergence of youth power, but it has to be based on a culture of tolerance and democratic value, pro- growth and forward looking, with abilities to lead a soon to emerge middle income economy.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on
Thursday sounded a strong warning
to the opposition against the
cascades of deadly violence
traumatising the nation.
“We’ve shown a great deal of
patience, but no more. Don’t think the
government so weak,” she said at a
discussion in the capital.
The Prime Minister’s warning came
following a nationwide frenzy of
bloodletting after a war crimes
tribunal on Feb 28 sentenced Delwar
Hossain Sayedee, a top leader of
Jamaat-e-Islami, to death for
atrocities inclusing rape and murder
in 1971.
“We don’t believe in conflict. But then,
we’re responsible for protecting the
life and property of the people.”
Leaders and activists of Jamaat and its
student front Chhatra Shibir ran riot
following the verdict, and clashed
with security agencies in the last
several days, leaving at least 67
people dead.

The government alleges that local
leaders of BNP, which already
enforced a daylong shutdown to
protest the killings in police firing
during the violence siding with the
Jamaat, were also involved in the
attacks.
Addressing BNP Chairperson Khaleda
Zia, Hasina said: “That you will resort
to destruction and kill people and we
will tolerate is not going to happen
anymore.”
She mentioned that the Cabinet
Secretary had been asked to send
letters to the Deputy Commissioners
for form ‘violence-prevention
committees’ to face the people who
are killing people and damaging
property.
People from all sphere of society,
including Muslim clerics, will sit on
the committees, she added.
The Prime Minister urged the leaders
and activities of political parties to
make lists of the people involved in
the violence and give those to the
committees.
The Awami League organised the
discussion at Bangabandhu
International Conference Centre in
the afternoon marking the historic
March 7, the day when Bangabandhu
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman called the
people to ready for independence
struggle in 1971.
The Awami League President called
upon the people to unite like in 1971
on the issue of trials of the suspected
war criminals.
She termed the BNP ‘neo-Pakistani
collaborator’ and asked it to dump
‘war criminals’.
Hasina also addressed Jamaat and
Shibir activists: “Why will you take the
side of those who killed and tortured
people of this country in 1971? It’s
internationally recognised that
criminals will be tried.”
She mentioned her father initiated
trials of the war criminals after
independence. “Ziaur Rahman
usurped power violating the
Constitution after the murder of
Bangabandhu. Later he stopped war
crimes trial process by promulgatign
martial law.”
Alluding to Khaleda, she said: “She
claims herself to be the wife of the
proclaimer of the independence. Then
again she takes side of anti-liberation
force. What answer to this does she
have for the people?”
Hasina said the opposition leader will
have to take responsibility for the
death of at least 67 people during the
violence.
“Khaleda Zia is ordering violence on
the one hand and giving statements
expressing sympathy to the Hindu
community people for the attacks on
their houses, on the other.”
“She is playing a nice game,” the
Prime Minister added.
HAsina criticised the BNP chief
further for cancelling her scheduled
meeting with Indian President Pranab
Mukherjee.

Karim Selim and Mohammad Nasim,
